Betta and Fresh water BB goby?

Post by Kamaljot on Wed Oct 27, 2010 10:10 am

Has anyone kept bumblebee goby with a betta? Whats the minimum tank sizew? What do you feed them as they seem very fussy?

I wouldnt recommend it. Bumblebee gobies are very slow feeding at are likly to get bulled out of food by the betta. There also really hard to get of of live or frozen foods. They can be a little nippy and territorial aswell. And the water requirements are different. They would prefer about 25C water with a PH of 7.5+ and bettas prefers around 28c with a PH of below 7.

Ive spent a while trying to find something a bit different for the bottom but cant find anything that will fit all the need. So looks like it will have to be the standard betta tank mates.

If it was wild type of betta you might get away with keeping them together because they do come from the same places as some wilds its just Splendens have been captive/selective breed for so long they need lots of other things.

I honestly cant find anything that isnt already recommended everywhere. The problem is Betta Splendens have been bred in aquariums for so long there so far away from the needs they used to have in the wild. The rivers they come from in there wild are low 20 in the winter and high 20 in the summer so for all that they could work keeping them at a higher temp all year around will increase there metabolism which will shorten there lives. Then you have the problem of tank size. Alot of them like to be in big shoals which there just isnt enough room for. Then where alot of them come from there is high flow and well oxygenated water which because of bettas long fins wont be manageable so there wont be enough oxygen in the water for them to thrive which again will shorten there life span. Most of the fish that are a bit rare will be wild caught aswell so will be very demanding on PH and temperature being accurate and since betta splendens have different needs to most of the fish theres going to be problems.
So pretty much it looks like it will just have to be the common fish chooses.

Boraras brigittae
