Strange dot on fish

Post by SiennaBay on Wed Jul 28, 2010 8:58 am

Hi, When I got up this morning to check on my betta, I noticed that he has a tiny white dot in the center of his forehead. This wasn't there last night. There are no marks anywhere else on him. He's VERY active, always swimming around and spreading out his fins. Actually, right now he's acting pretty wild. He rubs his face against the front of the tank a lot (I guess begging for food) -- can this cause a mark on the fish? I tested his water last night and all seemed to be fine. I changed 25% of the water yesterday too. I thought I might pick up a box of aquarium salt in case there IS something wrong with him. What should I do?

Update -- I just looked at the fish again and now the white dot is less noticable but there is now a tiny black mark next to it. I am totally perplexed.

What did the while dot look like - grain of salt or fluffy? Only thing I can think of is maybe a touch of whitespot or fungus.

The white spot turned entirely into a black mark. What in the world could that be? Some kind of bruise?

I'm having trouble uploading a photo. If you click on this link, you can see my fish. The photo doesn't it show it real clear but if you look on his forehead you'll see a black mark and there are also little white marks above each eye. Neither of these things were there when I got him last week. Before the black mark showed up, all that was there was his greenish-on-maroon scale patterns. He is constantly and I mean constantly rubbing his head up and down the front of his tank. He never settles down or just calmly swims around. Is this normal for bettas? I wondered if he "bruised" himself. I put aquarium salt in his tank today, in case he does have some kind of a problem I thought that would help:

Here is a better view, from the top. You can really see the black mark here. (The brown thing you see is a plant bulb on the bottom of the tank. The white on the fish's back is actually a line of bubbles in the water):

Just thought I'd ask if theres any change. Is it worsening or looking any better? I do hope hes improving for you!

I reread Van's Sticky in Betta Health on A Guide to General Fish Diseases which I imagine you have read too. I couldn't say if its bacterial or a parasite. I don't think its an internal problem, but it very well could be as I'm inexperienced.

Have you found anything out or come to any conclusions at all? Good luck to and the Betta!

The photo with the top view reminds me of flames on a fifties hot rod. Cool!

Thanks for checking in! I still have no idea what is wrong, but the black mark seems to be lighter than it was before. Maybe the aquarium salt I put in the tank helped. The fish acts very fiesty so I guess he doesn't feel sick. Guess there's not much else I can do. Funny how you mention about the "hot rod flames" look -- I thought the exact same thing! As a matter of fact, I named my fish "Flame" because he does look like he has flames wavering around him with every movement he makes. Pretty fish! Smile

I wish I could have been some real help. Maybe in time. You picked out a good fitting name. I'm always amazed with the names people do come up with!

I've been a little lazy lately, but I used to read old post just for the information.
I vaguely remember one about white spots above the eyes and I think more than one did mention theirs having them show up.

I guess all you can do for the time being is continue watching him closely for any adverse changes. I'm glad he seems to be acting okay.

I'm hoping to pick up a 10gl. used with all the equipment plus lots extra for$40 and they said might be willing to go done some on that. I want more Bettas! I'm thinking halfmoon and a halfmoon plakat.

Divide my two 10gl. tanks for equal housing!

From the pics to me it looks like just general discolouration, quite a few of my boys and couple of darker girls have something similar around their heads. If it was a white/greyish patch i'd be worried it was columnaris (HORRIBLE illness) but it really doesn't look like an illness. Sometimes their scales do just change colour, maybe he bumped his head or something.

^Those dots would be sensory pores I think they're called Smile sometimes they're more noticeable than others, like little multiple nostrils lol!

Hi
Can't really see from the pictures, but I would just monitor until something more definite appears, if it does. Bettas do have spotty heads sometimes so it could just be normal.

Hi all, Good news -- the spot on my fish's head disappeared and he looks normal now. EXCEPT, now he has mysterious rings around his eyes! Starting a new topic on that.
