Thanks guys.

Quilling is when they lose their babiy quills at around 12 weeks old and new stronger ones come through which can make them quite huffy, so it's important to handle them everyday even if they don't want to be or they'll not bond to you.

They're not always ideal if you have alergies cos they do have fur and their quills can make your skin sting. You have to wash your hands before and after handling.

Looking after them is time consuming. They are very messy and do the most enormous poos They have to be handled EVERY day and mine get daily clean outs plus twice a week their bedding and cages are completely washed and scrubbed clean. Their feet get mucky from running through their mess and need to be cleaned regularly along with clipping their back toe nails which grow quickly. They will frequently poo and pee on you too lol but they can be trained to use a litter tray.

Sounds awful but there are perks cos they are so funny to watch and once bonded with you they'll quite happily plonk down on your lap to have a sleep. You can stroke their fur and tickle them under their chins. They'll take food from your hand and eventually they will lay their quills flat so you can stroke their backs.

The best place to buy from is a registered recommended breeder NOT pet shops. Registered breeders will give you a registration certificate for your hog. You'll have to get onto their waiting lists but at the moment most of them have them closed and wont be selling babies until after Xmas due to the recent media attention. Most will also get you to fill out a questionaire, so you must do your research.

Pygmy Hog forum is a great place to get started. Lots of great information and also Hedgehog Central.

Didn't mean to put you off lol! They are lovely but you do have to put in the work to get them to bond with you as they are very timid creatures. They're not the pet for everyone but each little milestone you reach make you feel great.

You see lots coming up for rehoming because people get scared to handle them or realise they don't have the time to put in with them.
