Undergravel Filtration and Lighting

Post by lilacamy931 on Sat Sep 05, 2009 3:42 pm

How do you rate it and just to ensure how good it is to set up?

The 18" cube came with these bits following:

Do I put the tray at the bottom, cover with two inches of gravel have the fat tube running up inside of wall/divider, the thin tube inside it that runs outside to the pump and that is it? The bacteria will cultivate and all I do is gentle cleaning on surface of gravel?

This would save me having to get a new filter and also improvision with the current and getting the flow around tank! Under gravel filtration, any problems with plants? External no go as too expensive and internal would have to stick to a wall little unsightly and also adapt to adjoining compartment which not too much problem but if can use what have may be good thumbup

Thanks for eveyones patience with me!

With lighting, would Marina Spotlights do or can anyone recommend relatively cheap light sourcing that would be good for bettas and live plants. Unfortunately on a budget doh!

Have found a hub for £5.99 that can take 3 marina submersible lights for £2.99 each:

Hi
Has that plastic tray have little holes in? If not, its not an undergravel filter, but a condensation tray.

I can see a problem No The weight of the gravel is going to push the tray down on the bottom of the tank. This is going to restrict the flow and cause dead spots. In a purpose built UG filter they are more rigid and have thousands of holes in.
Just thought i point this out prior to you putting it all together to save probs in the future:)

Thanks Pip, that one looks great and perfect size what would I do without you? LOL. So undergravel with some nice dorest pea gravel versus fluval 2 plus.?

Fluval 2 plus, would be about £14 for the filter, I know it would work and could clone instantly, though would be cumbersome on the side.

Or go with the Ebay link above, £10 filter and I would guess a deal I look at £10 for dorset pea gravel ontop and have to do heavy bacteria soakings.
